How to tune a Guitar

People often ask me how to tune a Guitar.

Here is a quick video to show you how i tune my guitar to Open C Tuning

This is the quickest way that i know of to get in tune and i thought a few of you may wonder how it is done.

The combination of the App and the Snark is awesome ! . I Get the tuning notes from the App [ their are hundreds of different tunings to try ] and i tune my guitar to those notes using the Snark. I like using the Snark for fine tuning as it has a very nice display and graphical representation which is very intuitive and easy to use.

It is also possible to tune to Open C in other ways and i will be doing a few more blog posts to cover these different methods

Of course both the GH Tuning App and Snark will tune a guitar to Standard Tuning EADGBE

Enjoy the Journey

enjoy the journey

Learning guitar is not something that can be done overnight. You will not wake up one morning and know that you have mastered guitar. Indeed this is what makes the process of learning guitar so intoxicating !

Whether you are a complete beginner or have been playing five years we can all learn new material, improve our technique and develop our musicianship.

Enjoy the process of learning and the results will come. Do not worry that you don’t know enough music theory or scales.. These things can be learnt in time – if you want to. Embrace the freedom of playing without theory restrictions. Play what sounds good and you will never play a wrong note.

“Life is what happens while you are busy making plans” John Lennon

Make music and learning guitar a part of your daily routine. In the early stages it is easy to become overwhelmed by all the things you don’t know. Keep it simple. Try and learn one chord per day initially and practice changing between the different chords

I would suggest learning chords in the key of C initially [just trust me on this]

Day One       C major
Day Two       F major
Day Three    G major
Day Four      A minor
Day Five      D minor
Day Six       E minor

Congratulations! With these six chords you can play virtually every song you are likely to hear on the radio if it is in the Key of C .. Don’t know what the key of C is ?? Don’t worry, all will be revealed eventually. Just enjoy playing these chords and see what songs you can play with them

So we have our first Goal

Learn these 6 chord shapes in the first week. Practice changing between them. Know that with each minute you practice you a gaining strength in your hand. In time the chords will sound clear and crisp and you won’t even have to think how to form the shapes. Just like driving a car

Sore Fingers? Does your hand ache ? Does your guitar sound right? How do i know my guitar is in tune?

These are all great questions.. and will be answered in time

After all we don’t need to rush, we just need to enjoy the journey
